Bet365 Secures Michigan Launch and Pursues Massachusetts Sports Betting Entry

    Key Points

    Contents

    • Michigan becomes the 17th US jurisdiction where Bet365 operates legally
    • Strategic partnerships secured with Detroit Tigers (MLB) and Detroit Red Wings (NHL)
    • Massachusetts Gaming Commission reopened licensing applications on April 9, with Bet365 expressing interest
    • Bet365 departed from the American Gaming Association membership in March 2026, raising questions about future business strategies
    • The American iGaming sector generated $71.9 billion in 2024, achieving its fourth consecutive annual record

British sports betting giant Bet365 has gone live in Michigan, expanding its American footprint to 17 jurisdictions. The operator made the announcement this past week while unveiling collaborations with two major Detroit franchises.

The sportsbook operator has inked agreements with Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers and the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings. These team sponsorships align with Bet365’s established approach of securing local sports partnerships when entering new markets.

The Michigan debut represents another milestone in Bet365’s measured American growth trajectory, which commenced in 2019 with New Jersey as its inaugural state. This followed the 2018 Supreme Court decision that struck down PASPA, the federal statute that had prohibited sports wagering across the nation.

Following that landmark judicial ruling, 41 American states have authorized multi-operator sports betting frameworks. The domestic gaming sector produced $71.9 billion in iGaming revenue throughout 2024, per American Gaming Association statistics. This figure represented the industry’s fourth consecutive year establishing a new revenue benchmark.

    Strategic Promotions and Market Approach

Bet365’s Michigan entry featured dual promotional campaigns. Casino platform users can access 1,000 complimentary spins plus deposit matching up to $1,000. Sports betting customers receive a “Bet $10, Get $365” introductory promotion.

This promotional framework mirrors strategies deployed elsewhere. In Missouri, Bet365 established a partnership with the St. Louis Cardinals. More recently, the operator finalized a comprehensive UFC sponsorship agreement spanning both American and Canadian markets.

Bet365 stands among a select group of European gaming companies achieving substantial American market penetration. Flutter Entertainment, parent company of FanDuel, and Entain, which jointly operates BetMGM with MGM Resorts, represent the other major European success stories.

Numerous European competitors have encountered difficulties. Operators including Betfred, Betsson, Unibet, Betway, and Tipico all launched American ventures with mixed outcomes, generally unable to establish significant market positions.

Bay State Expansion on the Horizon

Bet365’s expansion campaign may continue beyond Michigan. On April 9, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission unanimously approved the reopening of sportsbook licensing applications after receiving an inquiry from the operator.

MGC Deputy Justin Stempeck confirmed that Bet365 seeks a category 3 untethered license. This designation would permit standalone operations independent of physical casino partnerships within Massachusetts.

The Bay State maintains notably stringent regulatory standards. The MGC has established a reputation for rigorous oversight, while certain state legislators have expressed skepticism toward sports betting expansion.

Lawmakers have proposed SB 302, legislation designed to mitigate economic, health, and social concerns associated with sports wagering. Bet365 will likely encounter scrutiny regarding responsible gaming protocols and player safeguarding measures throughout the licensing evaluation.

Regulators may additionally examine the company’s historical operations in Asian territories, including China, as components of compliance due diligence.

Concurrently, prediction markets have experienced explosive growth domestically. Services such as Kalshi and Polymarket have gained considerable traction, particularly in Texas and California, where conventional sports betting remains prohibited.

FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics have each launched prediction market offerings. These three operators withdrew from American Gaming Association membership during late 2025.

Bet365 became the fourth organization exiting the AGA in March 2026. This departure has prompted industry speculation regarding potential prediction market initiatives from the operator.

Such plans remain unverified. Bet365 and fellow former AGA participants maintain active membership within the Sports Betting Alliance.
