Eden Hazard’s Stake Partnership Under Belgian Regulatory Scrutiny

oliBy oliMarch 17, 20263 Mins Read

    Key Points

    Contents

    • Former football star Eden Hazard has become a global ambassador for the Stake gambling platform
    • A promotional video was shared with his 27 million Instagram audience
    • Belgian regulators are investigating whether this promotion targets Belgian consumers
    • Stake operates without a Belgian gambling licence and appears on the nation’s prohibited operator list
    • Regulators may require Hazard to terminate the partnership if it breaches Belgian advertising regulations

The Belgian Gaming Commission has launched an investigation into Eden Hazard’s recent partnership with online gambling operator Stake, following the retired football icon’s promotional announcement on social media.

Hazard, who previously played for Chelsea and Real Madrid, revealed his new role as an ambassador through a video shared with his substantial Instagram following of 27 million users. The announcement immediately caught the eye of Belgium’s gaming watchdog.

Belgian gambling authorities have confirmed they will investigate whether Hazard’s promotional material constitutes advertising directed at Belgian audiences. The nation maintains rigorous restrictions on gambling promotions, particularly concerning operators lacking proper domestic authorization.

The platform in question operates without Belgian licensing. Stake appears on Belgium’s official registry of prohibited gambling operators.

In 2021, Belgian regulators significantly expanded their blacklist, incorporating approximately twenty unlicensed operators providing services without authorization. Operators appearing on this registry are deemed illegal within Belgian territory.

Consequently, promotional activities connected to blacklisted platforms face serious regulatory scrutiny.

Social Media Promotions Under Belgian Gaming Legislation

Recent years have seen Belgium implement increasingly stringent gambling advertising restrictions. Current legislation imposes severe limitations on promotional activities, especially those involving unlicensed operators.

These regulations extend to social media content. When authorities determine that material is accessible to or specifically aimed at Belgian consumers, it may be classified as domestic advertising.

Should the Belgian Gaming Commission conclude that Hazard’s promotional campaign violates these standards, he may face a formal directive to dissolve his agreement with Stake. Non-compliance could trigger additional regulatory penalties.

This investigation highlights broader questions regarding how national advertising legislation applies in an era of borderless social media. Marketing campaigns intended for international audiences can readily penetrate markets with more restrictive gambling advertising frameworks.

Stake Continues Recruiting High-Profile Football Personalities

Hazard represents the latest in a series of football personalities partnering with the gambling platform. Previous player ambassadors include Iker Casillas, Sergio Agüero, and Patrice Evra.

Gambling operators have increasingly pursued partnerships with retired footballers who maintain substantial global followings. This approach enables brands to connect with football enthusiasts across numerous markets simultaneously.

Nevertheless, such collaborations frequently generate legal complexities across various regulatory jurisdictions.

Hazard concluded his playing career in 2023. Throughout his tenure at Chelsea, he contributed to numerous trophy victories and netted 85 Premier League goals. His achievements earned him induction into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

His subsequent transfer to Real Madrid proved less fruitful, as persistent injuries restricted his playing time.

Following retirement, Hazard has maintained a relatively quiet public presence. His appearances have primarily been limited to charity fixtures and exhibition matches, including his participation in the Match for Hope event earlier this year.

The Belgian Gaming Commission has yet to announce a final determination. The resolution will hinge on regulatory interpretation of whether international social media endorsements constitute advertising within Belgian jurisdiction.
