Argentina Becomes First Latin American Nation to Ban Polymarket Platform

    TLDR

    Contents

    • Polymarket has been blocked nationwide in Argentina following findings that it lacked proper operating authorization
    • The complaint originated from Buenos Aires City Lottery (LOTBA), leading to a court-ordered platform shutdown
    • A judicial order mandates blocking of both Polymarket’s web portal and mobile applications throughout Argentina
    • Key regulatory issues included inadequate age verification, insufficient identity checks, and cryptocurrency payment acceptance
    • This marks the first time a Latin American nation has blocked a prediction market service

The crypto prediction market Polymarket has been shut down across Argentina following a determination by authorities that it was functioning without required legal permissions.

Buenos Aires City Lottery (LOTBA) initiated the complaint that ultimately resulted in the platform’s prohibition. Internal monitoring systems at LOTBA first identified irregularities in the platform’s operations, prompting further scrutiny.

Judge Susana Parada of the PCyF No. 31 court issued the binding order requiring Polymarket to be blocked across Argentine territory. The directive encompasses both the platform’s web presence and mobile applications.

LOTBA’s technical division collaborated with the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Gambling (FEJA) to conduct the investigation. FEJA’s inquiry was directed by Prosecutor Juan Rozas.

According to LOTBA Director Ezequiel Domínguez, the organization’s internal detection mechanisms initiated the enforcement action. He explained that their technical personnel’s initial discovery triggered the formal investigation that culminated in the judicial ban.

This action establishes Argentina as the pioneer Latin American country to prohibit a prediction market platform. No other government in the region has previously enacted such restrictions on this category of service.

Regulators Flag Crypto Payments and Missing Verification

Argentine regulatory bodies identified multiple operational deficiencies with Polymarket’s business model. A critical concern centered on insufficient age verification protocols for new platform users.

The absence of robust identity verification procedures also troubled authorities. Regulators determined that individuals could establish accounts without undergoing adequate validation processes, creating potential consumer protection vulnerabilities.

Polymarket’s facilitation of cryptocurrency-based transactions represented an additional regulatory concern. The platform permits both digital currency and traditional credit card payments, which officials deemed a compliance liability.

Collectively, these deficiencies led regulatory authorities to determine that Polymarket presented unacceptable risks to consumers and failed to satisfy Argentina’s regulatory framework.

    Multiple Agencies Coordinated the Ban

Implementing the prohibition required collaboration among various Argentine regulatory entities. The Association of State Lotteries of Argentina (ALEA), led by Ida Lopez, verified that Polymarket had never received authorization to conduct operations in the country.

The Argentine Chamber of Casinos, Bingos, and Annex Halls endorsed the enforcement action as well. Their participation demonstrated widespread agreement among the nation’s gambling oversight bodies.

Polymarket is a prediction market platform that enables users to wager on potential outcomes of forthcoming events. Unlike conventional betting operations, pricing on the platform derives from user participation rather than house-established odds.

Participants acquire shares connected to questions about prospective events. Share valuations fluctuate according to market dynamics, representing the collective probability assessments of platform users.

Blockchain infrastructure powers the platform’s transaction processing. This technological framework enables worldwide participation through cryptocurrency wallet integration.

Subsequent to the court order, Polymarket’s website and related applications have become inaccessible throughout Argentina. The restriction remains active across the entire nation.
